Roundtable on Sustainable Forests

In 1993, the United States declared its commitment to sustainable forest management of the entire nation's forests by the year 2000. In 1995 in Santiago, Chile the United States and 11 other countries endorsed the comprehensive set of 7 criteria and 67 indicators to assess national trends in forest conditions and monitor progress toward sustainability at the country level. Representatives of Federal and State agencies and a variety of national organizations in the United States met in 1998 to discuss and affirm their commitment to coordination and collaboration on sustainable forest management. From this discussion, a Roundtable on Sustainable Forests of national leaders was created and is beginning to focus on the use of the criteria and indicators at the national level in the United States.

The Partnership and the Forest Service jointly co-chair the Roundtable.
