Partnership History
The initial Sustainable Forestry Partnership was formalized in 1995 after a grant to Oregon State University from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. By 1997 and after additional donor support, the SFP included:
- Oregon State University
- Auburn University
- Pennsylvania State University and
- United States Department of Agriculture's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (USDA-CSREES)
In May 2005, original SFP partners and another 16 university and research institutions from across the United States held a 3-day "expansion conference" in Denver, CO. The long-term vision was to increase Partnership cultural and geographic diversity to meet a growing demand for sustainable forest management information and application. Workshop consensus changed the SFP name to the Sustainable Forests Partnership and started a continuing formal process to add new partners interested in conducting education/training, research, and assistance activities.
